Relativistic Corrections to the Sunyaev-zel’dovich Effect for Clusters of Galaxies. Ii. Inclusion of Peculiar Velocities

چکیده
We extend the formalism of the relativistic thermal Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect to the system moving with a velocity ~ β ≡ ~v/c with respect to the cosmic microwave background radiation. In the present formalism, the kinematic Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect for the cluster of galaxies with a peculiar velocity ~ β is derived in a straightforward manner by the Lorentz boost of the generalized Kompaneets equation. We give an analytic expression for the kinematic Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect which is valid up to O(β) with the power series expansion approximation in terms of θe ≡ kBTe/mc , where Te and m are the electron temperature and the electron mass, respectively. It is found that the relativistic corrections to the kinematic Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect are significant. For a typical electron temperature kBTe = 10keV, one obtains −8.2% and +1.3% corrections from the O(βθe) and O(βθ 2 e) contributions, respectively. The O(β ) correction is extremely small, +0.2% for β = 1/300 at kBTe = 10keV. Therefore it can be safely neglected. These relativistic corrections are directly reflected on the determination of the peculiar velocity β of the cluster of galaxies with the observation of the kinematic Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect. Relativistic Corrections to the Sunyaev-zel’dovich Effect for Clusters of Galaxies. v. Multiple Scattering
We extend the formalism for the calculation of the relativistic corrections to the SunyaevZel’dovich effect for clusters of galaxies and include the multiple scattering effects. We present a systematic method for the inclusion of the multiple scattering effects. The multiple scattering contribution is found to be very small compared with the single scattering contribution. For high-temperature ...

We extend the formalism of the relativistic thermal and kinematic Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effects and include the polarization of the cosmic microwave background photons. We consider the situation that a cluster of galaxies is moving with a velocity ~ β ≡ ~v/c with respect to the cosmic microwave background radiation. In the present formalism, polarization of the scattered cosmic microwave backgroun...
متن کاملExtensions to the Kompaneets Equation and Sunyaev-Zel’dovich Distortion
Analytical expressions are presented for relativistic corrections to the Kompaneets equation and the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich y-distortion. The latter provides a convenient method of inferring both the temperature and Thomson optical depth of the gas in clusters of galaxies using only observations of the spectrum of CMBR photons passing through the cluster. The relativistic correction gives an additi...
متن کاملRelativistic Corrections to the Sunyaev-zel’dovich Effect
We present an extension of the Kompaneets equation which allows relativistic effects to be included to any desired order. Using this, we are able to obtain simple analytic forms for the spectral changes due to the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect in hot clusters, correct to first and second order in the expansion parameter θe = kBTe/mc . These analytic forms agree with previous numerical calculations ...
متن کاملThe Sunyaev-zel’dovich Effect
The Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect causes a change in the apparent brightness of the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation towards a cluster of galaxies or any other reservoir of hot plasma. Measurements of the effect provide distinctly different information about cluster properties than X-ray imaging data, while combining X-ray and Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect data leads to new insights into the struc...
